How to Test Your Internet Speed

Get accurate results and understand what they mean.

⚡ Why Run a Speed Test?

Speed tests help verify you're getting the speeds you pay for and can pinpoint issues like network congestion, WiFi interference, or device limitations.

Recommended Tools

  • Ookla Speedtest (speedtest.net) – Most accurate, works in browser or app.
  • Fast.com (by Netflix) – Simple, focuses on download speed.
  • Google Speed Test – Search "speed test" on Google.

Best Practices for Accurate Results

1Use a Wired Connection (Ethernet)

WiFi speeds can be affected by distance and interference. For the most reliable result, connect your computer directly to the router using an Ethernet cable.

2Stop Other Internet Activities

Pause any downloads, video streams, cloud backups, or online games. Close all other browser tabs.

3Test Multiple Times

Run the test 3–4 times at different times of day (morning, evening) to see if speeds vary due to network congestion.

4Restart Before Testing

If speeds seem low, restart your router (see our restart guide) and test again after 5 minutes.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

  • Download Speed: How fast data comes to you. Important for streaming, browsing, downloading files.
  • Upload Speed: How fast you send data (video calls, uploading photos, cloud backups).
  • Ping (Latency): Response time – lower is better for gaming and video calls (under 30ms is excellent).

✅ Expected Speeds for Your Plan
Tunda Fiber plans deliver speeds up to the advertised maximum. However, over WiFi you may see 70‑90% of the wired speed due to environmental factors. Speeds are shared across all connected devices.

Still Getting Low Results?

If your speed test consistently shows much lower than your plan (e.g., 5Mbps on a 20Mbps plan) after following the steps above, please:

  • Check for any loose cables (Ethernet, fiber optic).
  • Make sure you're using the correct speed test server (choose a local Kenyan server).
  • Submit a support ticket or call us – we’ll diagnose remotely.
